On Thursday afternoon, April 18, a worrying incident took place on the A67 near Eersel: a truck loaded with batteries caught fire, leading to an alarming situation on the highway. Although fortunately the fire could be quickly extinguished, it still had significant impact on traffic and again highlighted the importance of safe storage of lithium batteries.
Firefighters were quickly on scene to fight the fire, but as a result of the fire, the highway was initially completely closed in both directions. Although traffic was later able to resume, motorists still had to expect delays, especially toward Belgium.
It is not yet clear exactly what caused the fire, but the incident highlights the importance of safety measures in the storage and transportation of lithium batteries. The risks of such fires can be significantly reduced by using special lithium safety containers, which are designed to minimize the risk of fire and explosion.
Clearance work is currently underway on the highway, which has resulted in partial closure of the right lane towards the Belgian border. The cleanup is expected to last until late in the evening, resulting in possible further traffic disruptions.
